Did You Know?

Color theory. You’ve heard the term but what does it mean?

Simply put- it is the study of how colors work together and how they affect our emotions and perceptions. It’s a structure for understanding color, shown through color wheels, color harmony, and understanding the way the colors work. For artists it is an essential toolbox that we are using in our works. The tools being the color wheel, primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, hue, saturation, and value. With these you decide whether to use monochromatic, analogous, complementary, split complimentary, triadic, tetradic, and square color combinations.

Utilizing hue, saturation, and value, you can mix colors from muted to brilliant, from light to dark. If you’re going for a rich, dark teal, you may want to mix blue (primary), green (secondary), and a little yellow (primary), then either black or a darker blue or green to get the depth. By doing this you’re changing the hue, saturation, and value, depending on how dark and vibrant of a teal you’re making. Now you can play with how to make that color pop using corals, muted pinks, and peaches, or deep browns and copper, a mix of metallics, or simply black and white. Each variation can create a different feeling and emotional response depending on what you wish to convey.
