Did You Know?

“Humans are the only species that create art.”

Humans create to capture beauty. Beautiful moments in time that elicit an emotional response such as a burning sunset over the water, a bustling Parisian avenue, or a tropical macaw in flight. We as both the viewer and artist are left with an impact that will not be forgotten.

Beyond beauty, artists will create to recall a past event. Hunter-gatherers would paint on cave walls, showing themselves, the animals they tamed, and their hunts. Many historians and anthropologists agree that these are the first forms of artistic expression. These images could have also had a functional purpose as well.

In today’s world art can represent anything. It has an endless multitude of purposes beyond self-expression; to teach young children new concepts, to make societal observations, to make people happy or uncomfortable, or even to elicit a discussion. We are communicating through imagery. We continue to tell stories through our art; portraits, comic books, children’s colorful story books. We have taken our art beyond the canvas- think tattoos, make-up, music and dance, clothing, and food. Humans have gone from painting on cave walls with ground sediments to creating beautiful architecture.

• Potluck is Wednesday, March 6th.

 

• Drawing with Rick is Friday mornings on Zoom from 10:30 to noon. In this class you will be learning the different drawing methods and techniques to start a drawing and finish it. This class is for beginners and advanced students alike. Students will be given the same reference picture prior to class.

 

• Beginning Conversational Spanish with Ricardo and Cathy is continuing through March 28th. Class is on Thursdays only going forward. We are so happy that you all are enjoying the class.

 

• Abstract Painting with Sarah Hanson is back on Tuesdays. Class goes from 1:00-3:00pm in person and on Zoom. It is $10 for members and $12 for nonmembers. This class will focus on painting more freely and the development of an individual’s artistic process. With an abstract approach, we will examine the principles of art, grow painting skills and work to recognize and release artistic bias. Open to all skill levels.

 

• Diamond Painting with Julie Buchanan is now on Fridays from 10-12. Join us weekly and enjoy this fun, creative art style. Kits are available for purchase.

• Congratulations and fantastic job to all our artists. We earned 26 ribbons/awards this year. Come by our gallery to see the beautiful art.
