Did You Know?

The Lyrid meteor shower is about to light up the sky during the next few days in April. A meteor shower is when meteors, also known as shooting stars, flash across the night sky. Like clockwork, in late April this meteor shower will be giving a spectacular show that can be viewed from around the world. For thousands of years the Lyrid meteor shower has made this trek across our skies and is one of the oldest meteor showers on record.

The best way to view the Lyrid Meteor Shower is before the dawn, while its still very dark out. Pick an area outside of the city, away from street lights, being a blanket or chair. With your feet facing east, lie back and look up. Give yourself time from your eyes to adjust and soon you should be able to spot the meteors crossing the sky. The peak of it will be April 21^st – 22^nd, while being visible through April 29^th.

The Lyrid Meteor show is one of four that cross our skies throughout the year. The Quadrantids in December 28^th – January 6^th. Then the Lyrids in late April. Next are the Eta Aquariids, associated with Hailey’s Comet, in May 5^th – 6^th. Finally, the Perseids appear best in August 11^th – 12^th.

• Beginning Conversational Spanish is starts again April 22^nd. If you missed out on the first round of Spanish this class is for you. Class will run for six weeks on Monday from 10:00-11:30am.

 

• Fun with Watercolor is Thursday April 25^th with Kathy Edwards. Class is from 10:00 to noon.

 

• Friday April 26^th we are going to the Florida Museum of the Photographic Arts. They collect, preserve, and exhibit works both historic and contemporary by national and internationally known artists. After viewing the museum we will be going for lunch in Ybor. The signup sheet is on the resource table, please indicate if you are willing to drive. You can also call Arleen to let us know you’re coming at (813) 932-0241.

 

• Potluck is May 1^st. We have guest speaker, Sheryl Kay, joining us to talk about Book Collecting. She will explain how to find your niche, what to consider, how to determine fair pricing, and more.

 

• Crochet Class with Becky Helmink is beginning May 6^th. This 6 week class will be on Mondays from 1:00-3:00pm. Yarn will be provided for you. You may bring your own crochet hooks, sizes G, H, I, or you may borrow ours. The signup sheet is on the resource table. Seats are limited.

 

• Sometimes, things happen. If you cannot get to the LEC because you are temporarily (or permanently) unable to drive, you might benefit from our Uber card program. We received a grant that awards you a $50.00 Uber card you can use for transportation to and from the LEC. If you are interested, please call Arleen (813-932-0241) to get your application started.

 

• The LEC is looking for volunteers. Please let Sheila know if you are interested in volunteering with us. The shifts are 2 hours, either in the morning or afternoons.

 

• If you have been missing the weekly newsletter you can go on our website, lectampa.org and scroll down to bottom of the page. There you’ll see a line reading “Subscribe to our Newsletter” and a place to enter your email. Type in your email and hit “Subscribe”. This is the best way to be notified of upcoming classes and events going on at the LEC.
