Did You Know?

Capturing light in a drawing or painting can be tricky. Light can bring a painting to life by making the subject stand out, or making the landscape really pop. To understand light, we must also understand shadows, and how both interact with the environment and objects.

There are different forms of light, such as direct light, indirect light, reflected light, shadows, form shadows, and cast shadows. Then there are the different techniques in capturing light, such as value and contrast, color temperature, edges and transitions, and more.

Shadows are not just black; they’re a complementary color usually green, blue, or purple. To get the right highlights you may need to play around with the colors on your palette to make sure the tones are right.

While not easy to get right off the bat, becoming familiar with these tools can help you create depth and elicit emotion from your work. You just have to practice.

Practice. Practice. Practice.
