Mah Jongg is an addictive, exciting game that blends skill, strategy, and luck! The tile-based game is in the Rummy family and typically played with four people. It is truly a game for all ages and can be learned by anyone. There’s a reason it has been popular for centuries!

Mah Jongg was first developed in nineteenth-century China. When this ancient game was introduced to the U.S. in 1920, it was embraced enthusiastically. By 1937, a group of Mah Jongg players met in New York City and standardized the game, thus forming the National Mah Jongg League. Each year, the League changes the hands and rules to add more excitement to the game.

This introductory course to Mah Jongg is perfect for beginners as well as Mah Jongg players who want to refresh their skills. No prior Mah Jongg experience or knowledge is required to sign up!

The class will focus on becoming familiar with the basic elements of the game. Mah Jongg enthusiast Alice Webb will help students learn the tiles and their functions, suits, tile setup, the National Mah Jongg League rules, the terminology, and strategies and techniques. Throughout the course, students will work on picking hands and improving their game through supervised play. Students will get the chance to test their new skills and have fun!

Upon completion, students will become more confident in their knowledge of Mah Jongg and meet like-minded students interested in playing Mah Jongg together. Don’t miss your chance to learn this sociable, competitive game!
