Dimensional Doodling with Sarah Hanson

Wednesdays 10 am to 12 pm

Meditative doodling is a relaxing, easy to learn and fun drawing style that combines structured patterns and spontaneous mark making to create fun
designs and whimsical drawings. This class combines meditative doodling with paper craft. The doodle drawings created will be made into dimensional objects by folding, cutting and pasting. Drawings are transformed into functional or decorative objects.

Materials needed include multiple sheets of drawing paper, both thick and thin paper, black marker or felt-tipped pen, pencil, glue stick, scissors.

Beginner to Advanced Artists welcome!

Meditative Doodling allows for drawing without judgement.

In every class, we focus to settle the body, calm the mind and let creativity flow through guided meditation to create a stream of conscious drawing.

When your mind is relaxed, it is able to focus and be at its most creative.

In all cultures, symbolism and graphic representations communicate ideas, beliefs and share common lore and the rich history of experiences.

Over the next several weeks, this class will also explore patterns and symbols from across time and around the globe.

April

Meditative Doodling is a drawing practice that develops focus, concentration, self-compassion and creating without judgement.

Doodling this month will explore Kirigami, a variation of origami that involves cutting paper as well as folding. Each class begins with a guided meditation during which flow and continual drawing is achieved. The doodles created in this time will then be used to create kirigami art and 3D pop-up cards during the second half of class.

You will need a variety of paper, cutting surface, x-acto knife, scissor and adhesives. Please print the kirigami template attachments.

Each kirigami model should collapse and fold flat when completed; and each model should be created from a single sheet of paper — nothing should be added or removed, but rather the surface of the paper should be rearranged without losing any surface area.

May and June

Meditative Doodling is a drawing practice that develops focus, concentration, self-compassion and creating without judgement.

This series of Doodling will explore Chakras. Each week will focus on one of the seven chakras.

Chakra, a Sanskrit word, translates as “wheel” and refers to energy points in the body. Chakras are thought of as energy circles within the body that correspond to nerves and organs, and affect our emotional and physical well-being.

Each class will focus on a specific Chakra. All classes begin with a guided meditation during which flow and continual drawing is achieved.

You will need a variety of paper, ruler and compass.
Please print the (pdf) attachments.

Cultivating mindfulness is possible using different methods and exercises. Doodling is certainly one way we can unwind from emotional stress and be in the now. In different ways art and creative thinking contribute to mental health or awareness. Mindfulness is not just meditation, it is a way of life.

Research has shown the power of meditation and the science behind it. One of the reasons it is so powerful is that it fosters acceptance. Creating art is a type of meditation, an active training of the mind that increase awareness and emphasizes acceptance of feelings and thoughts without judgment and relaxation of body and mind.
