AI and Publishing
Can you publish your book if you used AI (Artificial Intelligence) to write it? Well… Yes.
AI is on the rise in art, music, and writing. Unfortunately, the laws surrounding AI-generated content are still evolving. As of today, there are no legal barriers to publishing a book or claiming artwork generated or assisted by AI. Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing allows you to use AI to write your story and publish it.
There are, however, issues with copyright. AI generated work cannot be protected by copyright. According to the Authors Guild “Under most publishing contracts, authors represent and warrant that the work submitted will be original to them.” The use of AI for more than simply generating ideas or editing text in the final manuscript violates the warranty, as the text is then not considered original to the author.
According to reports, the general feeling among authors is that AI should be used as an editing tool and for inspiration. AI should be an aid, not the author. If you’re stuck on a character name, go to one of the thousands of online AI name generators. If you’re stuck trying to fix a plot hole you can use an AI bot to “fix” it. You can also use an AI Chat bot to mimic your characters and have “conversations” with them.
What do you think? How should AI be used?
