Developing an Artist Statement
First, what is an artist statement, and why is it important?
An artist statement explains the artist’s intentions for their body of work. The artist gives information on their exhibition or portfolio, allowing the reader/viewer a better understanding of the artist and their work. It is a glimpse into the artist ‘s life purpose. The statement should be easily articulated to give the viewer a basic understanding of the work they are viewing or are about to view.
What’s in an artist statement? Usually a brief bio that includes your education and artistic influences. You might include your process or where you derive your inspiration. The artist’s statement should be between 100 and 300 words. It is recommended to take your bio to your peers and get feedback.
Finally, consider this document to be ever changing, it will evolve over time just like you.
