Announcements for the Week of August 18-24

Did you know…

From 1912 to 1948, “sporting arts” Olympic medals were awarded in architecture, literature, music, painting, and sculpture.  The entries had to reflect sports in some way.   Over the years, the five main categories were broken into sub-categories.  Sometimes, if the judges could not agree on a winner, only bronze medals were awarded—or no medals at all.  “Sporting Arts” as Olympic events ended in 1948.

Who were some of these artist-Olympians?  John Russell Pope won a 1932 Olympic silver medal for his design of the Payne Whitney Gymnasium at Yale University.  Paul Landowski won a 1928 gold medal for his sculpture of a boxer.
